The high cost of rental housing is a major concern for Californians. Cities throughout the state are using rental registries in an effort to increase transparency in housing costs and rental policies, ensure compliance with housing and rental regulations, and provide data for city planning and tenant services. San Luis Obispo is considering instituting a rental registry for all residential rental properties in the city to better track rental data.

A rental registry typically requires landlords to submit information annually about the characteristics of the units they rent. This webinar will review the spectrum of registries at local, state, and national levels and discuss how they can be used in rental market policy development and evaluation.

Shane Phillips, Manager of Randall Lewis Housing Initiative for the UCLA Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies, will moderate a panel of housing researchers and local government officials to discuss how these registries work and how they might help to mitigate rising rental housing costs.

This Lunch with the League program is part of the League’s efforts to educate and inform the public; to provide information that enables county residents to understand major public policy issues and how local government agencies are handling them.
