League of Women Voters of San Luis Obispo County Announces Webinar on The Social Housing Model for Affordable Housing

The League of Women Voters of San Luis Obispo County (LWV SLOCO) will host a webinar at noon on September 16, 2024 featuring Jennifer LeSar, who will introduce the concept and practice of social housing as a model for permanent affordable housing at all income levels.

One of the most urgent social and economic needs of California is a bigger supply of housing that is affordable to households with low to moderate incomes. This universally-recognized fact has led to a search for innovative approaches for building it. One promising model is social housing which creates multi-family mixed-income dwellings using financing options that can support the permanent provision of affordability.

Jennifer LeSar, Founder and CEO of Global Policy Leadership Academy and the LeSar Portfolio of Firms, has led several trips of California housing experts to Vienna, Austria to research its 100-year-old social housing program. About 80% of Vienna residents are renters and the social housing structures are fully integrated across the city. The program emphasizes building housing supply not subsidizing demand with vouchers or credits.

In an interview with The Guardian in Vienna, LeSar said she wanted "to get a conversation going [in California] about building affordable homes on a large scale…I think it is happening… We have had two legislators from California who came here…and they’re now sponsoring bills."

The webinar will be held via Zoom teleconference at noon on September 16, 2024. The event is free and open to the public but registration is required.
