Interest in social housing as one way to address housing affordability is growing rapidly in the US. This “
Lunch with the League” webinar on Monday, April 14, at Noon, will feature Helmi Hisserich, Director of the Portland Oregon Housing Bureau. Ms. Hisserich has more than 25 years’ experience leading public affordable housing development in Los Angeles and Portland, OR. This presentation will take a close look at the main elements of Vienna’s Social Housing system and focus on the aspects of Vienna’s Social Housing that are most replicable in the U.S.
Vienna, Austria is widely recognized as one of the world’s most livable cities, in large part because their Social Housing system ensures housing is affordable for all. Unlike the U.S. housing model which treats housing as a commodity, Vienna’s housing system is considered a human right, and the public sector plays an important role in ensuring moderately priced housing is continuously developed to meet the needs of its growing population. Participants will be able to submit questions. Therese Mufic Neustaedter, Co-Chair, LWVC Housing & Homelessness Interest Group, will moderate the presentation.
This webinar is part of a series of programs looking at the lack of affordable housing in our county, and is part of the League’s efforts to educate and inform the public, to provide information that enables county residents to understand major public policy issues and how local government agencies are handling them. This Zoom event is free to the public, but registration is required. Please register at lwvslo.org.
