CO-PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE

Greetings from your LWV SLOCO co-presidents Ann and Elizabeth. 2023 Co-Presidents

We have been so impressed and heartened by all the dedication and work of our members this past year. And so proud of all of you. We have all been promoting the League motto “Empowering Voters and Defending Democracy” with our hearts and souls. Thank you.

During this election season our members have sponsored and staffed 7 candidate forums, organized 13 voter registration events at local colleges and high schools, staffed 5 election polling sites and presented 14 Pros and Cons forums to local organizations. We have reached out to build partnerships with the Cal Poly Latino Voter Engagement Project and the Diversity Coalition. Our Opening Meeting BBQ in September was supported by the Los Osos/Baywood and San Luis Obispo Kiwanis Clubs and included a tour of the SLO Botanical Garden. Throughout it all, we have been recognized as a strong advocate for an independent redistricting commission in our county.

As we begin the New Year, our League will be engaged in a number of projects. One of the things we do at the New Year is to interview our elected state assembly and state senators. This is always an informative and important project. We will have 3 this January, Dawn Addis, John Laird and Gregg Hart, and will be working with the Leagues from Monterey, Santa Cruz and North Santa Barbara County. The outcome of these interviews will be shared with our members and the LWV of California. But most important for our League is our upcoming in-person Program Planning Meeting on January 25. The League of Woman Voters was formed as a grass roots organization. This meeting is designed for you, our members, to voice your concerns and interest in issues that are important to you. What should we, as a group, focus on and spend our energy and resources on in the next 2 years. We hope that you will join us.

We wish you all a safe and happy holiday season and look forward to renewing our efforts with your support in 2025.

Ann and Elizabeth

What’s on YOUR mind?

What local issues concern you? Is it local government reform – voting and elections – clean energy – water issues – housing affordability – homelessness – public safety – health care? Join us on January 25 to talk about it and plan our priorities for the next two years.

As a “grass roots” organization, the League looks to its members for guidance in how best to use our time and energy and allocate our resources. Whether it’s an educational effort or advocacy on a specific issue we depend on our members to identify the issues and carry out our program. So we need to hear from you.

On Saturday, January 25, we’ll meet in person to:
  • Review the status of the Program we adopted in June 2023 for the 2023 – 2025 biennium.
  • Develop ideas for the 2025 – 2027 biennial program.
  • Hear from you about your concerns and interests. What are the important issues in our community where the League can make a difference?
  • And most importantly, get to know each other. We’ll break into small discussion groups to learn more about each other and why we’re all members of the League.

Planning the Program for the next two years is primarily the work of League members. However, guests are welcome to attend, observe the process, and provide important information and insights as we make decisions about what we want to accomplish over the next two years.

There will be coffee, fruit, and breakfast pastries to enjoy.

Make your voice heard. Join us on January 25.

SLO COUNTY LEAGUE CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAYS

To celebrate this festive season, over 70 League members, guests, elected officials and their reps shared lively conversation, savory and sweet bites and beverages on Thursday, December 12 at the SLO Farmhouse Market & Wine Lounge. The League’s greatest asset is our many dedicated members, and after a busy election time, a holiday party was the perfect way to reconnect, recharge and make merry. If you were there, thanks for coming, and if you missed it, we hope to see you at a League gathering in 2025!

Celebrating Community
Date: December 21, 2024
Time: 7 PM - 9 PM

When we said we would celebrate our community more than ever, we meant it!

For centuries joy has been used as a form of resistance. Audre Lorde famously said, “Joy is an act of resistance” because joy can give us the needed "energy for change".

So, join us as we move our bodies and celebrate leaving 2024 behind, dancing into the future!

Location: Nexus SLO Ballroom Dance Community - 3845 S Higuera St - Lower Level of the SLO Public Market, San Luis Obispo.

Every donation will be used to support our community networks and continue the work in 2025 and 10% of the profits will go to our friends at Gala Pride and Diversity Center! 🏳️‍🌈
